22/9/10 O exercício físico na gestação foi visto durante certo tempo como algo a ser evitado pela crença de que poderia ser prejudicial à mãe e ao feto. Após a década de 1980, o número de mulheres que incorporou ao seu dia a dia a prática de exercícios físicos começou a crescer, e simultaneamente aumentou o interesse em pesquisar os efeitos que essa rotina de exercícios poderia ter sobre a gravidez. Hoje já não se discute mais sobre o fato de o exercício ser benéfico ou prejudicial. As recomendações para que as mulheres permanecessem sedentárias durante a gestação foram aos poucos sendo abandonadas, principalmente porque muitas mulheres ignoravam tais recomendações sem que se verificasse qualquer dano resultante do exercício. As diretrizes internacionais recomendam a atividade física (AF) na maioria dos dias da semana e durante todo o período da gravidez. Restrições são feitas apenas para algumas atividades (como o mergulho profundo e esportes com alto risco de choque traumático) e para situações específicas de gestações de alto risco (principalmente em casos de ruptura prematura de membranas, descolamento de placenta e histórico de sangramento severo a partir do início do terceiro trimestre). Já está claro que os mesmos resultados positivos em saúde experimentados por mulheres não grávidas podem ser obtidos também por gestantes. As questões agora se referem mais a como usar a (AF) em benefício da mãe e do feto e quais ganhos específicos podem resultar de uma rotina ativa durante o período da gestação. Recentemente, tem se discutido a hipótese de o exercício ter alguma influência sobre a idade gestacional, e ser um fator de proteção para o nascimento pré-termo.
